A recent Gallup poll indicated that upwards of 47% of Americans profess to be political ‘independanst,’ voters without a political party home.

It is also believed that only about 20% of eligible voters participate in primary elections, largely because the two major parties exclude non-affiliated voters from the process (except in New Hampshire).
