Strengthening Local Banking: Kristy Merrill and Jim Kisch Breakdown the BankChain Alliance

In this interview, host Jeff Chidester speaks with Kristy Merrill, President and CEO of the NH Bankers Association, and Jim Kisch, President and CEO of Passumpsic Bank, to explore the newly launched BankChain Alliance. The discussion focuses on how state banking associations are joining forces to build a shared, industry-governed blockchain network that keeps local institutions competitive in an evolving digital landscape.

What is the BankChain Alliance? The BankChain Alliance is a collaborative, industry-owned network created by dozens of state bankers’ associations. Designed to provide a secure, standardized blockchain infrastructure, the alliance enables banks of all sizes to offer modern financial products—including instant payment tools, tokenized deposits, and automated settlements—under a unified regulatory framework.

How It Benefits Community Banks and Their Clients

  • For Community Banks: It levels the technological playing field by giving regional and local banks access to advanced, low-cost payment rails without relying on third-party fintech intermediaries or expensive proprietary builds.
  • For Clients: Consumers and business owners get faster, safer, and more transparent payment services—like real-time settlements and modern digital transactions—while maintaining the trusted, personalized relationships they rely on with their local banks.
