CONCORD, N.H.- Former State Supreme Court Chief Justice John Broderick is leaving his position as the administrator in charge of the settlement fund related to claims of abuse at the Youth Development Center and other New Hampshire facilities.
However, Broderick says his departure at the end of the month is the result of a recent change in the nature of the position, that follows new legislation which went into effect on July 1st that turns the role of administrator from an independent appointment to a political appointee.
The clarification comes after Governor Ayotte’s office issued a statement Tuesday regarding Broderick’s pending resignation in which she thanked Broderick for his service.
“Justice Broderick has had a distinguished career in public service at the New Hampshire Supreme Court and the YDC Settlement Fund, and he is a tireless advocate for mental health awareness …. I thank him for his service to our state.”
The new appointee, chosen by the governor will have no final authority to make binding awards, officials note that the position will also have no fixed term, and the administrator can be removed at any time by the governor for any reason.
