MANCHESTER, N.H.- Police say an investigation is underway after an 8-year-old child was hit by a district school bus on the city’s West side on the first day of the new school year.

According to police the incident occurred Thursday afternoon around 3:30 p.m. when a bus transporting kids from the Parker-Varney Elementary School struck the student at a very low speed in the area near the Outfitters Thrift Store on Second Street near West Hancock Street.

Following the incident the child was taken to Elliot Hospital, with non-life threating injuries.

District officials say they’re aware of the incident and are in contact with the families of the students on board.

Out of the incident police say a second bus was sent to the scene to pick up the remaining children and transported them to their planned drop-off locations.
