MANCHESTER, N.H.- A month after the city backed plans to convert the former Hallsville School into affordable housing, the project was paused after members were forced to table a request for variances.
Thursday evening neighbors attending a public hearing raised concerns over traffic and property values, which lead to a demand for variances, however with only four members of the City’s Zoning Board of Adjustment in attendance, a motion to approve the variances failed on a vote of 2-2, and as a result the topic was ordered tabled and added to the agenda for City’s next meeting scheduled for July 10.
Mayor Jay Ruias recently announced the city had agreed to sell the 134-year-old schoolhouse and the property it sits on for $50,000 to York Real Estate. Officials say the planned changes would lead to an improved gym, which would remain accessible to Manchester Parks and Recreation Department and would also feature new landscaping.
