The town of Conway and a bakery owner are scheduled for trial in a First Amendment dispute about a painting of a sun and pastries. The artwork on top of Leavitt’s Country Bakery shows sunbeams shining on a mountain range made of sprinkle-covered chocolate and strawberry doughnuts, a muffin, and other pastries. Conway’s zoning board decided that the painting is a sign that’s subject to regulation and says it’s four times bigger than its sign code allows. Bakery owner Sean Young has been told to modify or remove the painting. He’s suing the town, saying it’s violating his free speech rights.
