Governor Kelly Ayotte used her veto pen yesterday after months of debate over so-called book bans. The bill would have prohibited schools from distributing materials that this bill defined as “harmful to minors.” Supporters said the bill was meant to protect students and promote “age-appropriate” material. It would have also allowed the attorney general to take civil action against schools or districts to enforce the law. Ayotte wrote that the existing state law already requires school districts to adopt policies allowing parents to object to certain materials if they deem them inappropriate.
