MANCHESTER, N.H.- Granite Shore Power, the company who owns the now retired Merrimack Station in Bow, has filed a request with the Federal officials to begin talks with Eversource about connecting to the power grid for what is believed to be a data center.

According to paperwork filed in April, Granite Shore Power says the study will work to “identify “possible adverse impacts” of connecting to Eversource’s system and examine “the supporting infrastructure needed to mitigate such possible impacts.” However, the paperwork doesn’t specify the type of project or exactly where it would be located. But it does seek to connect a 350-megawatt project to the power grid.

The possibility of the facility in question being a data center comes after the state’s Consumer Advocate Donald Kreis on Monday posted to social media that at a recent meeting officials from Eversource “let slip” that it was talking with a developer interested in building a data center in Bow.

Town officials meanwhile tell the Concord Monitor there have been talks with an unnamed company about bringing a data center to town.

As for how state officials are feel about the possibility of a data center being set up, Governor Kelly Ayotte Wednesday said Wednesday she’s not entirely on board with the idea due to a number of established concerns; “We know that there are other environmental impacts, including water, noise impact to local communities…And that’s why I think it’s appropriate that we have a moratorium on data centers, so that we can evaluate all of these concerns that have legitimately been raised: energy, water, noise, other concerns that members of the community have raised about siting data centers. I just don’t see a place for data centers here in New Hampshire.”

As for her thoughts on the talks between officials in Bow and Eversource Ayotte went on to tell WMUR-TV she wasn’t impressed.
