FRANCESTOWN, N.H. — One man is in Police custody following an hours-long standoff that began after a local police chief was seriously injured.
According to Police 47-year-old Richard Vannostrand has been charged with assault, resisting arrest and a number of other charges for assaulting Police Chief Frederick Douglas Wednesday before barricading himself inside his home and keeping authorities at bay until a little after 5pm.
Authorities say the incident began when Chief Douglas responded to a call outside Vannostrand’s home that a mail carrier was being harassed and someone was damaging their vehicle. From there Douglas attempted to reason with Vannostrand which led to a physical altercation which left Douglas with significant but non-life threating injuries. It was at the point Vannostrand then went inside the home and barricaded himself which led to an increased police presence until Vannostrand was removed from the home by a non-lethal means and placed into custody.
Following the day’s events Chief Douglas was taken to an area hospital and treat for non-life threating injuries, while Vannostrand remained in custody and scheduled to appear before a judge in Goffstown District Court.
