PORTSMOUTH N.H.- Portsmouth native Doris Moore has been honored with a Congressional Gold Medal for her service during World War II as a member of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion.

Moore, who passed away at the age of 77 in 1993 served with The Six Triple Eight, whose responsibilities included moving 17 million pieces of backlogged mail to American soldiers and sailors, boosting their morale.

In 2024 Tyler Perry directed a movie about the Six Triple Eight.

Following her service Moore earned her Master’s Degree and became the first African American social worker in the Granite State.
